1st LEVEL MANUAL TROUBLESHOOTING
Safety guidelines
While troubleshooting your computer, follow these safety guidelines :
Never remove your computer cover while your computer is turned on
and while the modem and AC power cords are connected.
Do not attempt to open the monitor or LCD panel. To-do so is
extremely dangerous. Even if the power is disconnected, energy stored
in the monitor or LCD panel components can be dangerous. Also, opening
the monitor or LCD panel voids the warranty.
Make sure you are properly grounded before opening your computer
case.

First steps
Try this thing first before doing to the following sections:
Make sure the power cable is connected to your computer and an AC
outlet and that the AC outlet is supplying power.
If you use a power strip, make sure it is turned on
If a peripheral such as the keyboard or mouse does not work, make
sure that all connections are secure.
If you added or removed computer components before the problem
start, review the installation procedures to make sure everything was
installed correctly.
CD /DVD drive
The computer does not recognize the CD / DVD drive
Make sure the CD / DVD label is facing up, then try again.
Try a different CD. Occasionally CDs are flawed and cannot be read
by the CD /DVD drive
Shut down and restart your computer
Clean the disc.
Restart your computer, and then enter the BIOS Setup utility by
pressing F2 or Delete. Make sure that the IDE controllers are enabled.
Check to see if the drive is configured correctly, and reconfigure
the drive, if necessary, by following the instructions in the drive
manual.
Open your computer and make sure that the cable is connected
correctly to the CD / DVD drive and the system board IDE connector.
If your have SCSI device in your system, check the cable connected
to the SCSI card. If the CD / DVD drive is the last drive on the cable
(the drive farthest from the card), make sure that the CD / DVD drive
is terminated.
Reinstall the device driver.
Computer
The computer will not start
Make sure the power cable is connected to an AC power source and the
computer is turned on
Check the cable connection the power supply to the system board.
The setting in the BIOS Setup utility are not retained
Replace the system battery.
Diskette drive
The diskette drive is not recognized
Shut down and restart your computer
Reinstall the drive ( windows )
Open your computer and make sure that the cables are connected
correctly to the diskette drive and the system board
You cannot save a file to diskette or you get the message disk is
full or write- protected
Delete unnecessary files on the diskette and try again.
Try different diskette. Occasionally diskettes are flawed and cannot
be read by the diskette drive.
Make sure the write-protection tab on the upper- right corner of the
diskette is down ( unprotected )
Run scandisk on the diskette. Scan the hard drive for error. If
error are detected and corrected, try using the diskette again.
The diskette drive LED is lit continuously.
Remove the diskette from the drive. if the light stay on, try
restarting your computer.
Open your computer and make sure the cables are connected correctly
to the diskette drive and the controller. Make sure the pins are not
bent or misaligned.
Expansion cards
The computer does not recognize an expansion card
Shut down and restart your computer
Reseat the card.
Hard drive
You receive an insufficient disk space error message.
Delete unnecessary file from the disk using Disk Cleanup.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin Icon and
selecting Empty Recycle Bin from the pop-up menu.
Save your file to another disk or drive. if the hard drive is full,
copy any file not regularly used to diskettes or other backup media,
then delete them from the hard drive.
The hard drive cannot be accessed, or you receive a general failure
reading drive C error message.
If a diskette is in the diskette drive, eject it and restart the
computer.
Try restarting your computer by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del.
Open your computer and make sure that the cables are connected
correctly to the hard drive and the system board
If your computer has been subjected to static electricity or
physical shock, you may need to reinstall the operating system.
You receive a Non system disk or disk error error message
Eject the diskette from the diskette drive then press Enter.
The computer does not recognize an IDE drive.
Make sure the IDE connectors are enable in the BIOS Setup utility.
To enter the BIOS Setup utility, restart your computer, and then press
F2 or Delete.
Reinstall the driver.
Open your computer and make sure that the IDE cable is connected to
the system board IDE connector.
Keyboard
Keyboard does not work
Make sure the keyboard cable is plugged in correctly.
Try a keyboard that your know works to make sure the keyboard port
work
Reinstall the keyboard device drive
If you spilled liquid in the keyboard, turn off the computer and
unplug the keyboard. Clean the keyboard and turn off the computer and
unplug the keyboard. Clean the keyboard and turn it upside down to
drain it. Let the keyboard dry before using it again
A keyboard character keeps repeating
Make sure nothing is resting on the keyboard.
Make sure a key is not stuck. Press each key to loosen a key that
might be stuck, then restart the computer.
Memory
Memory errors were detected during computer start up
Check the memory module for proper seating and orientation.
Use third- party diagnostic programs to help determine if a memory
module is failing. If the memory module is faulty, replace it.
Monitor or LCD panel
Important: Make sure that the monitor has warmed up for approximately
30 minutes before making any adjustment. About the picture quality.
No picture
Make sure the power cord is properly connected to both the back of
the monitor and the wall outlet.
Make sure the video cable is securely connected to the back of the
monitor and to the back of the computer.
Make sure the monitor power button is on.
If the power saving indicator is orange or blinking orange :
1. Make sure that the computer is on
2. Move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard to bring the
monitor
out of sleep mode.
3. Check the video connector and the end of the video cable for any
pins
that might be bent or pushed in
4. Make sure that the video cable is not damaged.
5. Restart the computer with the monitor turned on.
Perform a monitor self-test by turning off your monitor and
unplugging the video cable from the back of the monitor. Turn the
monitor back on and wait for ten seconds.
If the monitor is functioning properly, a self- diagnostic appears. |
